Just press ESC to pause and unpause game. The code is in the while loop now and I deleted the while loop for event checking at the end of the Python file since it was redundant. Works smoothly from what I can tell.
I didn't touch anything else. New to github so not entirely sure why it says I deleted everything and started over. Anyway good luck. First open source group contribution for me.
